Nelson Motorsports team gears up for 2020

The team headed to South Carolina on Wednesday for The Ice Breaker at Myrtle Beach Speedway, a race set to take place on Saturday. Sammy Smith will drive the Nelson Motorsports No. 12 with the team looking for a third straight win in the season-opening race. Timothy Peters won the Icebreaker in 2018 in the same car Smith will drive this weekend. Ty Gibbs, grandson of Joe Gibbs, owner of the NASCAR Cup Series team Joe Gibbs Racing, won the race for Nelson last year.

Sammy Smith Joins Nelson Motorsports

Sammy Smith has signed with Nelson Motorsports to make six starts in the CARS Tour Late Model Stock Car series beginning with the Race to Ace 125 at Ace Speedway in Altamahaw, NC next Friday, May 3rd.


Smith comes off a successful run at the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car racing at New Smyrna Speedway, where he won a race during the nine nights of action and won the Pro Late Model championship.  Smith made his way to Late Models from go-karts and Legends cars and after his success at New Smyrna, he’s ready to try his hand…

CARS Tour ‘Touring 12’ Lineup Announced for 2019

Mooresville, NC – For the second consecutive year, the CARS Tour will have the “Touring 12” program in place for drivers making the commitment to run the full season of events. Ty Gibbs Scores Emotional Victory at Myrtle Beach

Ty Gibbs scored an emotional victory at Myrtle Beach Speedway on Saturday with his grandfather, Coach Joe Gibbs, in attendance.

Gibbs took the lead from Will Burns on lap 116 and held off a late race challenge from reigning Myrtle Beach Speedway track champion Justin Milliken in the closing laps to score the victory.  The win, his biggest to date, came less than one month after J.D. Gibbs, who had been the bedrock of Joe Gibbs Racing for years, passed away.

Ty Gibbs set to drive for Nelson Motorsports Late Model


Sixteen-year-old driver Ty Gibbs will join local late model team Nelson Motorsports for a handful of races this season, team owner Barry Nelson announced on Monday.


Gibbs is the grandson of Joe Gibbs, owner of the NASCAR Cup Series team Joe Gibbs Racing and former Washington Redskins head coach. The younger Gibbs is a JGR development driver. He posted on his Twitter account he will run seven races with Nelson this season.
